So what is the big deal if our nation also owes? Well to begin with we lose a lot of influence over people we owe money to. When we want someone to lend us money it is hard to make demands on them. More than likely the demands will be made of us and come our way. What does this mean to your life and the lives of future Americans? Well over 200 years ago, Benjamin Franklin wrote: “When you run in debt; you give to another power over your liberty.” He also noted, “The borrower is a slave to the lender, and the debtor to the creditor.” These are great points for people to keep in mind — but is it good advice for our nation?
